You may be prompted for restart after you uninstall the update for Lync Server 2010, Web Components Server.

Sometimes, when you try to uninstall the update package, you are prompted for the source CD. If this behavior occurs, insert the source CD, or provide the path where the source files can be found.

After you uninstall this update package, Internet Information Services (IIS) may stop running. This issue occurs because the ApplicationHost.config file is changed when you uninstall this update package.

Note The ApplicationHost.config file is located in the following directory:
%Windir%\System32\inetsrv\config\
The following changes are introduced to the ApplicationHost.config file:
  1. Duplicate entries are created in the sections after <location path="Lync Server Internal Web Site" overrideMode="Allow"> and <location path="Lync Server External Web Site" overrideMode="Allow">.

    After you uninstall this update package, the two sections resemble the following:

    <location path="Lync Server Internal Web Site" overrideMode="Allow">
    <system.webServer>
    <security>
    <authentication>
    <windowsAuthentication/>
    <windowsAuthentication/>
    </authentication>
    <authentication/>
    </security>
    <security/>
    </system.webServer>
    <system.webServer/>
    </location>
    <location path="Lync Server External Web Site" overrideMode="Allow">
    <system.webServer>
    <security>
    <authentication>
    <windowsAuthentication/>
    <windowsAuthentication/>
    </authentication>
    <authentication/>
    </security>
    <security/>
    </system.webServer>
    <system.webServer/>
    </location>
  2. The following two entries are created before the </configuration> tag at the end of the file:
    • <location path="Lync Server Internal Web Site" overrideMode="Allow"/>
    • <location path="Lync Server External Web Site" overrideMode="Allow"/>

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Remove the duplicate entries in the two sections mentioned earlier. After you do this, the two sections resemble the following:

    <location path="Lync Server Internal Web Site" overrideMode="Allow">
    <system.webServer>
    <security>
    <authentication>
    <windowsAuthentication/>
    </authentication>
    </security>
    </system.webServer>
    </location>
    <location path="Lync Server External Web Site" overrideMode="Allow">
    <system.webServer>
    <security>
    <authentication>
    <windowsAuthentication/>
    </authentication>
    </security>
    </system.webServer>
    </location>
  2. Delete the following two entries at the end of the ApplicationHost.config file:
    • <location path="Lync Server Internal Web Site" overrideMode="Allow"/>
    • <location path="Lync Server External Web Site" overrideMode="Allow"/>
  3. Save the ApplicationHost.config file.
  4. Restart IIS.
